The share of electric vehicles on Cypriot roads remains low compared with conventional cars, despite government incentives aimed at promoting their use.
Data shows that while the number of electric vehicles is gradually increasing, conventional fuel cars still dominate the market. Hybrid cars appear to enjoy slightly more acceptance, suggesting a cautious approach by drivers toward fully electric options.
Trends in numbers
Between 2019 and 2024, registrations of electric and hybrid cars have steadily climbed, though they remain a minority.
- 2019: 37,802 passenger cars registered; 54 electric, 1,884 hybrid
- 2020: 30,828 registered; 78 electric, 2,338 hybrid
- 2021: 26,634 registered; 120 electric, 4,513 hybrid
- 2022: 26,598 registered; 512 electric, 6,103 hybrid
- 2023: 36,608 registered; 995 electric, 10,819 hybrid
- 2024: 1,529 electric, 14,246 hybrid cars on the road
The figures show a steady, if modest, rise in electric and hybrid car numbers. Despite incentives and increasing availability, Cypriot drivers continue to favor traditional fuel vehicles, indicating that electric cars have not yet become a mainstream choice.
