When life gives you orange warnings… stay inside

Temps soar to 43°C inland as extreme heat takes center stage from noon to 5 p.m.

Newsroom

There’s no yellow flag fluttering today, just a bold, blazing orange warning from the Meteorological Department, signaling extreme heat across the region. The alert is in effect from 12:00 noon until 5:00 p.m., and it’s not just hot, it’s record-flirting, pavement-sizzling, stay-in-the-shade-if-you-can hot.

Temperatures are expected to peak at a blistering 43°C inland, while even the usually cooler mountainous areas will be sweating it out at around 34°C. Coastal zones offer only a slight reprieve, with highs ranging from 34°C to 36°C, depending on where you are.

This intense heat is courtesy of a seasonal low-pressure system dragging in a heavy, warm air mass, basically nature’s way of throwing a heatwave party and inviting everyone, like it or not. Skies will stay mostly clear, offering little relief from the sun’s full-force spotlight.

Winds will start the day on the mild side, blowing from the southwest to northwest at light to moderate strength, around 3 to 4 Beaufort. But don’t be surprised if they pick up some steam near windward coasts this afternoon, reaching locally strong levels of 4 to 5 Beaufort. Meanwhile, the sea will be slightly rough, though probably not enough to tempt most people away from their air conditioning.

Tonight, the weather remains calm and mostly clear, with a chance of patchy fog or low clouds forming in the east. Winds will ease, staying mostly light and occasionally moderate. Overnight temperatures will offer little in the way of true relief, dipping only to around 25°C inland and along the coast, and 23°C in higher elevations.

Looking ahead to Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, the forecast offers more of the same: sunny skies, minimal cloud cover, and temperatures that remain stubbornly above average for this time of year. Thursday may see the mercury inch even higher, with no significant cool-down expected before the weekend.

So unless you're a cactus or a lizard, this is your sign to hydrate, stay shaded, and give your oven a break. Nature's already preheating everything for you.
