Authorities and animal rights groups are expressing deep concern over the sudden disappearance of numerous cats in the village of Astromeritis, located in the Nicosia district. Early reports suggest that the animals may have been victims of deliberate poisoning, prompting calls for swift and decisive action from law enforcement.
Residents who regularly cared for and fed the local cat population say dozens of the animals vanished within days. Some were later found dead, sparking distress and outrage throughout the community.
Preliminary evidence points toward a coordinated poisoning effort, an act that would represent a serious legal violation. Police have been notified and are actively investigating the situation.
Under Cyprus law, specifically Article 4 of the Animal Protection and Welfare Law, the use of poison or harmful substances on animals without justification is prohibited. The Animal Action Group of the Ecologists’ Movement – Citizens’ Cooperation has urged authorities to thoroughly pursue the case and enforce the law rigorously.
The group also appeals to residents to come forward with any information that might assist the investigation.
“We are in 2025, and it is imperative to demonstrate respect and care for animals through our behavior,” the group stated. “How a community treats its vulnerable creatures is a reflection of its values.”
