Wind energy helps end black outs across Cyprus

Cyprus transmission system operator urges public to conserve energy despite recovery efforts

With the help of wind energy, the power cuts that occurred in various areas across Cyprus on Friday afternoon due to a technical failure in the generation system that affected generation units in Dhekelia and Vasilikos stopped. Nevertheless, power generation is still at a borderline level, with the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSOC) reiterating its call for restriction of consumption until 22:00.

Speaking to CNA, TSOC spokesperson Chara Koussiappa said that the synchronization of the Generation Unit AT/S 4 at the Dhekelia Power Station, which was out of service after a technical fault in the Generation System, has been completed, which, combined with the increased wind power generation available at this time, resulted in stopping the curtailments applied earlier.

"But we are borderline," she noted, reiterating the call to the public to limit their electricity consumption until 22:00 to avoid having to make cuts again.

Koussiappa also noted that it is not yet known when the second fault in the generation system, which resulted in the loss of Generation Unit AT/S 3 at the Vasiliko Power Station and led to forty-minute rotating power outages across the country, will be resolved.
