Power outages sweep Cyprus after technical fault

Cyprus transmission system operator urges residents to reduce electricity use amid widespread blackouts

Newsroom

A technical issue at 6 p.m. Wednesday caused widespread power outages across Cyprus, prompting the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSOC) to urge residents to cut back on electricity use.

The TSOC reported that a fault in the power generation system occurred at 6:03 p.m., leading to the shutdown of a power unit at the Vasilikos Power Station. This resulted in power losses in several areas. Efforts are ongoing to restore electricity as quickly as possible.

Earlier, at 5:29 p.m., another technical fault affected a different power unit at the Dhekelia Power Station. While this incident did not directly lead to outages, it contributed to the overall system issues.

The TSOC is asking the public to reduce electricity consumption between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to help manage the situation. The agency is implementing rotating power cuts, each expected to last no longer than 40 minutes.

Dimitris Nathaniel, Acting Spokesperson for the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, said that the issue is impacting areas nationwide, and teams are working to fix the problem. The Authority’s website also noted that communication with its Customer Service Centre is temporarily disrupted due to technical problems.
