The Cypriot government is moving ahead at full speed with its strategic partnership with U.S. tech giant NVIDIA as part of a broader effort to upgrade the country’s national infrastructure through the installation of a supercomputer scheduled to go live in June 2026.

The collaboration emerged from an investment roadshow led by President Nikos Christodoulides in April 2025, alongside cabinet ministers and investment bodies, aimed at attracting foreign investment in key sectors such as shipping, technology, and energy.

According to information obtained by Kathimerini, the supercomputer currently under development will provide national-level computing capabilities and will play a supporting role during environmental disasters and crisis situations. The project is seen as a major step forward for innovation in Cyprus, particularly at a time when artificial intelligence is advancing at breakneck speed and demands powerful, modern infrastructure and strategic autonomy.

The upgraded infrastructure, developed in cooperation with NVIDIA, which holds a leading global role in high-performance computing (HPC), AI data center infrastructure, and artificial intelligence development platforms, will be open to the entire ecosystem. Universities, research centers, the public sector and private companies will all have access under a defined framework of usage and governance rules.

NVIDIA’s contribution goes well beyond the technical side of the project. It also includes the transfer of know-how, training for researchers, students and specialized staff, and support for the broader maturation of Cyprus’ innovation ecosystem.

At the same time, the company will offer expert guidance on the practical application of these technologies in areas of strategic importance for Cyprus. These include clean energy, climate science, environmental challenges, disaster prevention, and biomedical research and bioinformatics for rare diseases—strengthening the country’s strategic autonomy and competitiveness.

“High-performance computing infrastructure is a fundamental prerequisite for any state that wants to expand and develop its artificial intelligence ecosystem,” Deputy Minister for Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Dr. Nikodemos Damianou told Kathimerini.

The benefits

HPC infrastructure brings wide-ranging benefits to a country. It boosts research and technological capacity, accelerates innovation, and improves public policy planning through advanced data analysis and simulations. It also contributes to national security, digital sovereignty and faster response to natural disasters, while attracting investment, high-tech companies and highly skilled professionals. The end result is greater competitiveness and stronger overall digital growth.

It is worth recalling that during the president’s visit to the United States last April, Cyprus held 13 targeted bilateral meetings and two roundtable discussions with major technology players, including Amazon, Google, NVIDIA, OpenAI, Tenstorrent and Plug and Play.

Looking ahead, government sources say further investment-focused visits are planned within the year, not only to the United States but also to other key target markets such as India and the United Arab Emirates.
