After years of planning and preparation, the expansion of Larnaka and Pafos Airports is officially underway. Hermes Airports announced on March 21, 2025, that it has completed the financing for the second phase of the airport upgrades, marking a significant step forward for the project.

With financing now secured, the company has signed agreements with the banks backing the venture and with Bouygues Batiment International SAS and Iacovou Brothers (Constructions) Ltd, the joint venture selected to handle the construction work. This follows the initial agreement signed with the government back in December 2024, which laid the groundwork for the ambitious expansion plans.

The expansion will take place in two stages at both airports, with Larnaka set to see the works completed in 30 months and Pafos in 27 months. The project promises to increase passenger capacity and significantly improve the overall travel experience.

At Larnaka Airport, the expansion covers a whopping 20,000 square meters and includes several key developments. The construction of a new annex will bring additional departure and arrival gates, creating a smoother flow for passengers. More baggage claim belts and a new passport control and security area will ease congestion, while the expansion of commercial areas will offer more shopping and dining options. There will also be an increase in aircraft parking spaces, making it easier for airlines to manage flights efficiently.

Meanwhile, Pafos Airport is set for a 30% increase in terminal capacity. This upgrade will improve passenger services and make security checks and other procedures faster and more efficient. The expansion will also see the southern parallel taxiway extended, giving the airport greater operational flexibility, which should streamline both arrivals and departures.

When all is said and done, Larnaka Airport will be able to handle 12.4 million passengers per year, while Pafos will be able to accommodate 5 million. This expansion is expected to greatly benefit Cyprus’ economy by facilitating smoother and more efficient air travel, helping the island to keep up with growing passenger demand in the decades to come.

Eleni Kaloyirou, CEO of Hermes Airports, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, "Today, we are moving forward with an investment by Hermes Airports, which exceeds €170 million, aiming to upgrade both airports and enhance their capacity, ensuring they can effectively meet the needs of the new era, extending beyond the end of the current concession agreement period."
