More than 60 children from Romanian families and Romanian-Cypriot households across Cyprus took part in a special International Children’s Day initiative in Nicosia, organised by the Embassy of Romania in Cyprus together with the Alliance of Romanians in Cyprus and Cypriot artist Michalis Pantelidis.
At the centre of the celebration was a creative workshop titled Romanian-Cypriot Friendship Through the Eyes of Children. Participants aged between five and twelve produced drawings and paintings inspired by the traditions, cultural heritage and national symbols of both Romania and Cyprus. Their artwork was later incorporated into six artistic scarves designed to represent the connection between the two countries.
The workshop was hosted at Pernera School in Nicosia and was led by Michalis Pantelidis alongside teachers from Romanian schools operating in Cyprus.

Opening remarks were delivered by Lavinia Ochea, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of Romania in Cyprus, and Christina Todea Christodoulou, President of the Alliance of Romanians in Cyprus. During the event, speakers reflected on the significance of International Children’s Day and the importance of ensuring that children have access to education, care, support and secure environments that allow them to develop and thrive.
Organisers also pointed to the value of cultural and artistic activities in helping young people build social connections, express themselves creatively and maintain links with their Romanian heritage. Such projects also encourage adults to support and guide younger generations.
For Romanian communities living outside Romania, International Children’s Day carries particular importance because it helps preserve language, customs and cultural identity among children growing up abroad. Through the workshop, participants explored their roots, strengthened ties with the Romanian community in Cyprus and contributed to closer relationships between Romanian and Cypriot families and communities.
