The top United Nations official in Cyprus met Tuesday with the outgoing U.S. ambassador in Nicosia for a farewell ceremony held inside the UN-controlled buffer zone, marking the end of her diplomatic posting on the island.
Khassim Diagne, the top UN official with the peacekeeping mission in Cyprus, met with Julie Davis at the offices of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, known as UNFICYP.
The meeting was held in the UN Protected Area in Nicosia, where Diagne thanked Davis for the support provided by the United States during her tenure, particularly in relation to UNFICYP’s work on the divided island.
According to UN officials, the discussion also reflected on broader cooperation between Washington and the UN mission, which has been deployed in Cyprus since 1964 to monitor the buffer zone separating the island’s two sides.
The U.S. has been among the key contributors supporting UN peacekeeping efforts, including diplomatic backing for the mission’s mandate under the wider framework of United Nations Peacekeeping.
The farewell meeting marked the conclusion of Davis’s posting in Cyprus, where she has served as the U.S. ambassador during a period that included continued diplomatic efforts related to the Cyprus issue and regional stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
UN officials said the meeting also highlighted ongoing international support for UNFICYP’s role on the island, as discussions continue about the mission’s future and the broader peace process in Cyprus.
