Limassol’s beloved Aris Club temporarily shuttered amid Heroes’ Square revamp

A historic tavern pauses operations as the iconic square undergoes an 18-month transformation

Newsroom

For nearly a century, the Aris Limassol Club has been a staple of the city’s culture—not just as a historic association, but as a beloved tavern serving up some of the best meze in town. Now, for the first time in years, its doors are closed, caught in the midst of the massive €5.5 million renovation project transforming Heroes’ Square.

The project, which began last November and is expected to last 18 months, aims to revitalize the area, emphasizing its historical and cultural significance while incorporating eco-friendly infrastructure and improved pedestrian access. While some businesses in the Square remain open, others—like the Aris Club—have had to temporarily shut down.

A Temporary Pause for a Legendary Tavern

For the past 15 years, Mr. Antonis has been at the helm of the Aris Club, serving up quality food and traditional meze to devoted patrons. Despite the extended construction timeline, he remains hopeful that parts of the Square may be completed by June, allowing the club to reopen earlier than expected—whether under his management or someone new.

"The Aris Club has changed locations about five or six times over the years, but it’s been here in Heroes’ Square since 2000," he shared, reminiscing about its deep-rooted history.

With the club on pause, we ask if he’s had more time to attend Aris matches, especially now that the football team is performing well. He laughs and confirms, "Of course! Now that I actually have time, I go."

A Limassol Favorite That Will Be Missed—for Now

The Aris Club has long been a favorite regardless of football loyalty, drawing in food lovers for its classic souvlaki, seftalies, ribs, and—of course—the famous zucchini balls. While some wonder if the tavern could operate amid the renovations, Mr. Antonis paints a realistic picture with a bit of humor: "If you open now, you’ll sell two coffees, and one you’ll give for free."

For now, fans of Aris' legendary meze will have to wait. But one thing is certain—when those doors open again, the tables will be full, and the zucchini balls will be in high demand once more.
