After deadly Germasogeia collapse, Larnaca launches urgent building inspections

Inspections target high-risk structures as authorities race to prevent another tragedy after two deaths

Newsroom

After the collapse of a building in Germasogeia last week that left two people dead, authorities in Larnaca are moving quickly, sending teams out from Monday to check buildings that could pose a risk to the public.

A six-member team made up of officials from the Larnaca District Local Government Organization and the municipality has begun on-site visual inspections of buildings already flagged as dangerous, as well as others that may have slipped under the radar.

The aim is straightforward: identify which buildings are truly unsafe, and act before tragedy strikes again.

Officials say around 15 to 20 buildings in Larnaca have already been classified as high-risk, and those are being treated as a priority. Inspections are already underway, with authorities looking to take immediate measures where needed to eliminate any danger.

The team will also work to identify additional buildings that may be hazardous, assess their condition, and tackle issues that could threaten public safety.

The move reflects growing urgency around the issue of aging and neglected structures, which has long been a concern but has now come into sharp focus.

Authorities say the effort is about prevention, stepping in early, reducing risks, and making sure no more lives are lost to avoidable building collapses.
