Blaise Metreweli CMG has been named the new Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), becoming the first woman to lead the organization in its 115-year history.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the appointment Monday, calling it a “historic” moment as the UK faces mounting national security threats, from foreign espionage to cyberattacks. Metreweli, who will be the 18th “C”, the agency’s codename for its chief, succeeds Sir Richard Moore, who will step down in the autumn.

Metreweli currently serves as Director General for Technology and Innovation at MI6, and previously held a senior role in MI5. A career intelligence officer, she joined MI6 in 1999 and has held various operational posts, particularly in the Middle East and Europe.

“I am proud and honoured to be asked to lead my Service,” Metreweli said in a statement. “MI6 plays a vital role, with MI5 and GCHQ, in keeping the British people safe and promoting UK interests overseas.”

Foreign Secretary David Lammy praised her experience and leadership, saying she is well-positioned to confront “global instability and emerging security threats” in an era where “technology is power.” He also announced an additional £600 million in funding for the UK’s intelligence agencies.

Cabinet Secretary Christopher Wormald called Metreweli “an excellent Chief” and role model, while Moore welcomed the appointment, describing her as “a highly accomplished intelligence officer and one of our foremost thinkers on technology.”

Metreweli studied anthropology at Pembroke College, Cambridge. She will take over leadership of MI6 later this year.
