A weak low-pressure system is currently lurking over the island, but don't be fooled—this is just the calm before the mildly apocalyptic chill named CORAL sweeps in from the north. Yes, it even has a name, because apparently, we need to personify the cold to make it feel even more terrifying.
Today: Expect a mix of sunshine, clouds, and a sprinkle of “do I need an umbrella?” uncertainty. Isolated showers and even a lone, rebellious storm could pop up, with a chance of hail—just enough to send Cypriots running for cover while Scandinavians laugh in the background. If you're heading up to Troodos, you might spot a delicate dusting of snow on the highest peaks, so prepare for the annual tradition of overjoyed social media posts featuring snowmen the size of grapefruits.
Winds will be picking up, reaching 4 to 5 Beaufort, which means those attempting to style their hair should just give up now. The sea will be a bit moody—calm in the east but wilder on the other coasts, just in case you were considering a casual February swim (don’t).
Tonight: The chill starts creeping in, with temperatures dropping to a bone-rattling 6°C inland, 9°C on the coast, and a delightful zero degrees in the higher mountains—perfect for those who enjoy frostbite as a winter activity. Clouds will hang around menacingly, bringing a few isolated showers and possibly more snow in the mountains. The sea remains rough, so maybe postpone that midnight yacht party.
Thursday & Friday: The real “brutal” cold (by Cypriot standards) arrives, with rain, snow in the mountains and semi-mountainous areas, and temperatures plummeting well below normal. We’re talking “dig out that one heavy coat you own and dramatically declare that you’re freezing” levels of cold. By Friday night, things will get even wilder, with intensified rain and snow.
Saturday: Say hello to full-on winter mode—cloudy skies, rain, storms, and snow creeping even lower in altitude. Meanwhile, a strong northerly wind field will sweep through, ensuring that stepping outside feels like an Arctic expedition (or at least that's what we’ll tell ourselves).
Temperatures will nosedive to levels that will have Cypriots acting as if we’ve been plunged into an Ice Age. But before we panic—Troodos Square currently boasts a whole 1cm of snow, with a whopping 7cm at Chionistra. So while we are getting a cold snap, let’s remember: we are still not Norway. Stay warm, Cyprus!
