Christodoulides hints at major developments in Cyprus problem this August

Cyprus prepares for critical role in MED9 and upcoming EU presidencies

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides met with the heads of the country’s diplomatic missions on Tuesday morning, July 30. During the meeting, Christodoulides confirmed recent reports of possible progress in the Cyprus issue within August.

Christodoulides briefed the diplomats on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus conflict and other significant matters related to the Republic’s policies. He noted that efforts are underway to restart negotiations, stating, “We are making strides towards resuming talks on our initiative. We may see developments as early as August or early September. We are fully prepared.”

The President also discussed preparations for Cyprus’s EU Council Presidency in 2026 and its role in the MED9 group, highlighting planned ministerial meetings and a summit of state leaders in Cyprus.

Additionally, he touched on the humanitarian corridor initiative to Gaza, emphasizing its importance as a longstanding goal. He also mentioned ongoing discussions within the European Commission about its new composition and proposed portfolios, which relate to Cyprus’s efforts.

Christodoulides concluded, “Our discussion today will be substantive.”
