Press Release
The Green Agenda Cyprus Summit, the island’s largest sustainable development conference, returns to Nicosia on June 4, 2026, under the central theme “Transition as a responsibility (not a trend),” bringing to the stage leading figures from the fields of sustainability and innovation. Among this year’s speakers is Constantinos Yiorkadjis, Chairman of the Nicosia District Local Government Organization and former Mayor of Nicosia.
In his keynote speech at the Green Agenda Cyprus Summit, titled “Water is the New Gold,” Yiorkadjis is expected to highlight a growing reality Cyprus is already facing: water is becoming one of the island’s most critical resources. He is expected to refer to ongoing challenges such as significant water losses in aging pipeline networks and the high cost of desalination, which continues to place pressure on public finances.
Within this context, he will focus on a solution that is already partially in use in Cyprus, the treatment and reuse of recycled wastewater for agricultural irrigation. The idea, he is expected to argue, is no longer theoretical but increasingly necessary, offering farmers a more stable water supply while also easing pressure on households and the state, as climate change impacts continue to intensify.
The Green Agenda Cyprus Summit is presented by Altia.
