A Cypriot film has received international recognition at the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, with The Lion at My Back, directed by Tonia Mishiali, winning the Ecumenical Award, one of the festival's parallel honours.
The film follows the lives of two women as they navigate the pressures of a conservative society while building a close and enduring friendship.
Cyprus was also represented through the production of the Greek film A Whole Person, Almost, directed by Efthymis Kosemund-Sanidis. The film, which examines themes of human relationships, love and reconciliation, received the Best Director Award in the festival's Proxima section.
The festival's highest distinction, the Crystal Globe, was awarded to The Fruit Gathering by Myanmar director Aung Phyoe. The winning film tells the story of two women living in present-day Myanmar and the challenges they face.
