President Nikos Christodoulides described the second intergovernmental meeting between Cyprus and Greece as a historic milestone. For the first time, 14 Greek Cabinet ministers joined their Cypriot counterparts in Nicosia, reflecting the deepening collaboration between the two nations.
The inaugural meeting occurred last year in Athens, with this year's session building on that foundation. It precedes a tripartite summit between Cyprus, Greece, and Jordan, attended by King Abdullah of Jordan.
Unprecedented Bilateral Collaboration
During a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, President Christodoulides highlighted the significance of these intergovernmental meetings, initiated in 2023 to address a gap in their bilateral relations. He emphasized practical achievements that impact citizens’ lives, such as:
- Digital Transformation: Cyprus has benefited from Greece’s expertise.
- Shipping: Cyprus brings its strengths in maritime matters.
- Medicine Prices: Both nations work toward shared goals in healthcare affordability.
The President also noted discussions on regional developments, including the Cyprus issue following recent talks hosted by the UN Secretary-General in New York and Greece’s engagement with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.
Prime Minister Mitsotakis’ Vision
Prime Minister Mitsotakis praised the measurable results of the collaboration, underscoring its transformative character. He emphasized areas of focus, including:
- Digitization
- Healthcare
- Shipping
- Education
- Energy
Mitsotakis commended Cyprus' economic achievements and affirmed that both governments share a reformist approach, prioritizing citizens’ well-being.
Regional Stability and Geopolitical Issues
The Greek leader expressed satisfaction with the ceasefire in Lebanon, enabling efforts to de-escalate regional tensions, and called for a similar focus on Gaza to address the humanitarian crisis. He stressed Greece and Cyprus’ roles as stabilizing forces in a turbulent region, recognized globally by NATO, the EU, and the US.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to close coordination to enhance their influence and cooperation on the international stage.
Cyprus Issue and Historical Context
The Cyprus issue remains a central concern. The island has been divided since Turkey's 1974 invasion, with over 36% of its territory under illegal Turkish occupation. Recent informal talks in New York between President Christodoulides, Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres reflect ongoing efforts toward a resolution.
This intergovernmental meeting underscores a shared vision between Cyprus and Greece, not only in addressing pressing geopolitical challenges but also in advancing mutual interests for the benefit of their citizens.
