Cyprus has granted approval for the country’s first crematorium, with construction expected to begin in September 2026 in Agia Varvara, Paphos. The facility, developed by Golden Leaves Cyprus Crematorium Limited, is scheduled for completion within a year and a half.

The company confirmed that it has received the required planning permit and is preparing for the next phase of the project. Once completed, the site will become the first officially licensed cremation centre in the Republic of Cyprus.

According to the announcement, the complex will include ceremony halls, memorial areas, and modern cremation equipment designed with advanced filtering technology and reduced emissions. The operators state that the systems will follow European environmental rules and Best Available Techniques standards.

Project representatives say the aim is to provide families with an alternative funeral option that combines modern facilities with environmentally conscious practices. The crematorium is also expected to accommodate people from different religious and cultural backgrounds in a respectful setting.

Maureen Watt, director of Angel Guardians Funeral Home and spokesperson for the company, described the approval as an important step after years of public discussion about cremation services in Cyprus.
