Cyprus is on the verge of joining the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, with just a few minor issues remaining to be addressed, according to a report by Dorita Yiannakou. According to a report by K, the country’s work program with U.S. authorities is nearly 90% complete. This program, which aims to enhance security cooperation between Cyprus and the U.S., has seen significant progress, including the completion of necessary legislative frameworks and the ratification of two key agreements regarding the exchange of information between the two governments.
The remaining hurdles are related to technical aspects, such as the Police Passenger Data Unit, the integration of Cyprus' police system with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's system, and ensuring regular security checks in passport and ID card printing areas. These tasks are expected to be completed in the next few days, allowing Cyprus to finalize its preparations within a few weeks.
The final step involves an upcoming visit from a team of experts from the U.S. State Department and Congress at the end of next month. They will conduct assessments and provide final approvals for the program. Cyprus’ eligibility hinges on meeting the threshold of rejecting no more than 3% of visa applications annually. Currently, Cyprus has exceeded expectations with a refusal rate of just 2.16%, putting the country on track to join the program.
Once approved, Cypriot citizens will be able to travel to the U.S. for business or tourism purposes for up to 90 days without needing a visa. This will simplify and speed up the process for Cypriots, who currently need a B-visa for travel to the U.S. The U.S. Visa Waiver Program already benefits citizens of other European countries, who use the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) to gain entry. Cyprus’ inclusion in the program will strengthen ties with the U.S. and bring significant benefits to business and trade between the two countries.
Currently, only Cyprus, Bulgaria, and Romania are not part of the program, but Cyprus is expected to complete the remaining steps soon, making its participation a "fait accompli."
