Traffic congestion and long queues were reported today at the Agios Dometios roadblock, as large numbers of shoppers from the occupied territories crossed into the free areas to take advantage of Black Friday deals. According to Turkish Cypriot media, many people have been coming since early morning, hoping to make the most of the sales in the south.
The queue of cars stretched all the way to the ring road of occupied Nicosia, as captured in photos by Yeni Dusen, highlighting the significant flow of shoppers through the only active crossing point for vehicles in Nicosia.
The increased traffic comes amid ongoing discussions about the adequacy of crossing points. Just days earlier, during a parliamentary committee session on his ministry’s budget, "supervisor" Tahsin Ertugruloglu argued that the existing number of crossing points was sufficient. However, the gridlock at Agios Dometios today raises questions about whether more crossings are needed to handle such high volumes of traffic.
