Cyprus roads get a makeover

New motorways and upgrades aim to make daily commutes safer, quicker, and stress-free for residents across the island.

Cyprus is moving forward with several major road projects aimed at making travel easier, safer, and faster while also supporting local development. From Paphos to Nicosia, a mix of ongoing construction, upgrades, and upcoming tenders is reshaping the island’s road network, but these projects aren’t without challenges, including legal hurdles, planning delays, and community debates.

Paphos–Polis Chrysochous Motorway: Waiting on a Decision

According to Kathiermini's Dorita Yiannakou, the Paphos–Polis Chrysochous motorway, intended to improve travel between Agia Marinouda and Stroumbi, is temporarily on hold. The delay comes from an appeal by the former contractor, AKTOR Group, who disagreed with the terms of the new tender announced in early August 2025. Their appeal covers technical, economic, and financial concerns, and the Tender Review Authority is set to hear arguments in mid-September and early October, with a final decision expected within a month. The project is estimated to cost around €90 million for the first phase.

Upgrades to the Old Paphos–Polis Chrysochous Road

While the new motorway faces delays, the older Paphos–Polis road is getting a facelift. ARACO, a Lebanese-owned company, is widening and upgrading the existing road. Delivery is expected by the end of the year, with extra security and traffic measures put in place to keep the works on track.

Nicosia Perimeter Road: Phases B3 and C

The Nicosia Perimeter Road is also seeing significant progress:

  • Phase B3 (from Archbishop Makarios Avenue in Deftera to Anthoupoli) began in July 2025 and is scheduled to finish by June 2028. The €29 million project is mainly funded through the "Thalia" program and is being built by the Iacovou–Cyfield consortium.
  • Phase C (from Anthoupolis junction to the Ergates roundabout) is preparing to go to tender in October 2025. Estimated at €85 million with a three-year timeline, it too will get 85% funding from "Thalia."

Denia–Astromeritis Motorway: Southern Route Confirmed

The government confirmed construction of the Denia–Astromeritis motorway along the southern route. This road aims to improve access, travel times, and safety. However, the choice of route has faced criticism from local community leaders and MPs, who had suggested alternative paths.

Tseriou Road: Expected Delivery Early 2026

The Tseriou road, connecting key parts of Nicosia, is being upgraded in two sections:

Public Works Project: From Theoktisto roundabout to the new junction at the perimeter road. Originally expected in September 2025, unforeseen issues—like moving underground cables and a water pipeline—pushed the completion to the first quarter of 2026. This €23 million project will better link Ippokratous Street and Tseriou Avenue to Lakatamia and the GSP roundabout.

Strovolos Municipality Project: From Theoktisto to Strovolos Avenue, managed by Cyfield Construction, started in October 2024 after years of delays. Costing roughly €9.8 million, it’s an urban development project co-funded by the state (80%) and the municipality (20%).

Key Takeaways

Cyprus is investing heavily in road infrastructure, which promises to make life easier for drivers and residents. But the timeline for these projects depends heavily on smooth tendering, legal approvals, and resolving technical challenges. If all goes well, by 2026–2028, the island’s road network could see a major transformation in connectivity, safety, and regional development.
