A recent Eurostat survey has revealed that life satisfaction in the European Union (EU) averaged 7.3 out of 10 in 2023. Cyprus performed well, scoring 7.5, placing it above the EU average and indicating a generally positive outlook among Cypriots.
With a life satisfaction score of 7.5, Cyprus ranks above several EU countries, including Greece (6.9) and Latvia (6.9). This suggests that Cypriots, on average, feel more satisfied with their quality of life compared to many of their European neighbors.
Factors contributing to this higher-than-average satisfaction likely include Cyprus' warm climate, strong sense of community, and relatively stable economy. However, life satisfaction can also be affected by elements such as personal well-being, financial security, healthcare quality, and social support systems.
Finland leads, Bulgaria trails
Among the 27 EU nations, Finland emerged as the happiest country, boasting a score of 7.8. Close behind were Belgium, Austria, Romania, and Slovenia, each scoring 7.7. At the other end of the spectrum, Bulgaria recorded the lowest life satisfaction score at 5.9, with Latvia and Greece following at 6.9.
Despite some disparities between member states, it is noteworthy that all EU countries except Bulgaria scored above 6, meaning most respondents expressed satisfaction rather than dissatisfaction with their lives.
The broader picture
Life satisfaction is influenced by various factors, including economic stability, education levels, employment opportunities, and overall living conditions. In Cyprus, a relatively high life satisfaction score suggests that residents generally enjoy a good quality of life, even amid global and regional challenges.
