Cyprus warns citizens to avoid Iran amid deadly protests

Internet blackout and violent clashes escalate as Supreme Leader blames foreign interference

Newsroom

The Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday warned citizens to avoid all travel to Iran as nationwide protests continue to rock the country.

Demonstrations, now entering their second week, began over Iran’s collapsing economy but have broadened into a challenge to the ruling clerical regime. Protesters in Tehran and other cities have clashed with security forces, chanting slogans against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and, in some cases, expressing support for the exiled son of the late Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

Authorities have cut off internet access across the country, a move aimed at limiting the spread of information and coordinating protests. Security forces have used rifles, shotguns with metal pellets, water cannons, and tear gas, with human rights groups reporting dozens of deaths, including children, and allegations of secret burials to cover up killings.

Khamenei, in his first major address since the unrest began, accused demonstrators of acting to “please the president of another country,” referring to U.S. President Donald Trump, and signaled that the crackdown would continue. Trump has repeated threats of intervention if protesters are killed, further heightening tensions.

Cypriot citizens in Iran are urged to stay vigilant, monitor official information, register on the Connect2CY platform, and contact the Cypriot Embassy in Tehran in case of emergency.
