The gradual production of desalinated water from mobile units provided by the United Arab Emirates has begun successfully, Cyprus’ Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou announced Tuesday.
According to the Water Development Department, the first mobile desalination unit began trial operations late Tuesday afternoon following technical testing and the resolution of several issues that had arisen during the preparation phase.
The unit has so far produced water of good quality, though the process remains in a testing phase. Technical teams from the department and the contractor are working intensively, with support from UAE technicians who returned to Cyprus on Monday for a 15-day stay. Their role includes optimizing the units’ performance and training local operators, who are expected to manage the units through the end of 2026.
Authorities said the effort is operating around the clock and remains a top priority. More units are expected to come online within 24 hours, and full operational readiness is anticipated in less than 15 days if no complications arise.
Officials described the initiative as a complex and technically demanding project that requires close coordination and specialized expertise under a tight timeline.
The Water Development Department said it is implementing the project as part of the ministry’s broader strategy to address mounting water demands and ongoing drought-related challenges.
Despite the boost to supply through this new infrastructure, authorities urged the public to use water responsibly and avoid unnecessary waste.
