Digital clues suggest Turkish source behind controversial video

Experts highlight unusual Turkish-language characters in footage targeting President Christodoulides, raising questions about origin and intent.

A controversial video questioning President Nikos Christodoulides’ campaign finances may have a Turkish connection, according to cybersecurity experts analyzing the footage that surfaced last night.

The video, whose authenticity has not been verified, contains text and on-screen elements featuring letters unique to the Turkish language, including “ı” (an i without a dot) and “ş.” Several English words accompanying the video, such as “campaign,” “finance,” and “via,” also contain these unusual characters, suggesting the content may have been typed using a Turkish keyboard.

Cybersecurity analyst Dinos Pastos warned that while these characters are not proof of the creator’s identity, they could indicate a deliberate effort to mislead or distract viewers. “It’s a small but significant detail,” Pastos said. “The language leaves traces. It doesn’t tell us who made the video, but it may reveal where it was produced, or at least the keyboard used.”

The footage, which appears to show Charalambos Charalambous, head of the president’s office, discussing campaign funds, emerged a day after Cyprus formally assumed the EU Council presidency, adding to the political tension. Government officials have dismissed the video as malicious, possibly the result of “hybrid activity” targeting the Republic, and stressed that investigations are ongoing.

Observers note the combination of timing, content, and the Turkish-language clues could point to a sophisticated attempt to influence public opinion or sow confusion. While the video remains unverified, its appearance has already fueled debate and intensified scrutiny of the president’s office.
