Authorities in Limassol were placed on high alert late Tuesday night after a series of explosions and a fire broke out near the city’s port area, prompting an immediate response from police and fire services.
The incident occurred shortly after 11:00 p.m. local time on May 6, when a fire erupted in a warehouse believed to be storing fireworks. The flames quickly spread, damaging agricultural equipment and two stationary vehicles, according to the Fire Service.
Speaking on state radio, Fire Service Chief Nikos Longinos said the fire was ignited by fireworks launched by unknown individuals in an open field adjacent to the port. Debris from the fireworks was scattered across a 30-meter radius, causing what was perceived as multiple explosions.
Fire crews arrived swiftly and brought the blaze under control before it could cause further damage. No injuries were reported.
Police and fire officials are continuing their investigation into the source and legality of the fireworks involved in the incident.
