The Cyprus Police have issued a public warning about a new wave of fraud carried out through the messaging app Viber, where criminals are pretending to be police officers in order to steal personal and financial information.
According to authorities, scammers are contacting citizens through Viber and initiating video calls while falsely claiming they are speaking on behalf of the Cyprus Police. In some cases, the callers present themselves as senior officials.
Police said a complaint was filed today involving a victim who received a call from abroad. During the call, an unknown man allegedly claimed to be the Chief of Police and told the victim he was conducting an investigation related to immigration checks and financial crimes. The victim was reportedly persuaded to provide personal details as well as credit card information.
The suspect reportedly turned on the video function during the conversation, appearing dressed in a police uniform while keeping his face out of view. The account used in the call displayed a profile photo of the Assistant Chief of Police and used the name “Cyprus Police.”
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and avoid engaging with suspicious callers. The Police advise citizens not to follow any instructions given during such calls, not to click on any links sent, and never to share verification codes received on their phones.
Anyone who may have provided banking or card information is strongly encouraged to contact their bank immediately to prevent possible misuse.
