Wednesday forecast: The north Greek wind machine is heading our way

Buckle up for a day that’s feeling extra gusty.

Newsroom

Mother Nature has decided we need a little excitement today. A system from Northern Greece is officially moving in, bringing a moody mix of clouds and the occasional thunderous roar. If you’re heading into the higher mountains, pack your mittens. That rain is turning straight into snow. However, we expect a gradual improvement starting early this afternoon, so the sky won't stay grumpy forever.

The real headline, however, is the wind. It’s picking up speed from the southwest, reaching "hold-onto-your-wig" levels of 6 to 7 Beaufort. If your garden furniture isn’t bolted down, it might belong to your neighbor by lunchtime. Consequently, the sea is putting on a dramatic show, going from rough to outright stormy on the windward coasts, so it’s definitely a day for admiring the waves from a safe, dry distance. Temperatures will hover around a crisp 18°C inland and a chilly 6°C in the mountains, so keep the heater on standby.

As we head into tonight, things settle down into a "partly cloudy" vibe, though the western half of the island might still see some stray raindrops, and the peaks could get another dusting of sleet or snow.

Looking ahead, Thursday and Friday will keep us on our toes with occasional cloud cover, but temperatures will stay pretty standard for this time of year. The true reward comes on Saturday, when the mercury finally starts to climb and the sun remembers it has a job to do.
