Recent rainfall has given a welcome lift to water supplies in the district of Paphos, with local officials saying the downpours have significantly strengthened dam reserves and improved the region’s overall water outlook.
Charalambos Pittokopitis, head of the EOA Paphos, said inflows into reservoirs over the past few days have been “satisfactory,” highlighting in particular the gains at Asprokremmos Dam. There, incoming water is nearing 10 million cubic meters, and capacity has climbed above 18%.
Smaller, but still noticeable, increases have also been recorded at Kannaviou Dam and Evretou Dam, he added.
Based on current data, Pittokopitis said the situation now appears far more manageable than earlier projections suggested. He expressed cautious optimism that, with proper management, there will be no need for water cuts to homes or businesses during the summer months.
The recent rains are also expected to benefit farmers and the broader agricultural sector first and foremost. Still, he stressed that improved inflows should not lead to complacency. Careful, sensible water use remains essential, he said, noting that reserves are still at relatively low levels despite the recent boost.
He called on authorities, local agencies and consumers alike to help reduce overconsumption and limit water losses.
