A family from Iran was arrested on Tuesday at Larnaca International Airport as they were attempting to travel on fake passports, with police later discovering their genuine documents in their hotel room.
A man and a woman aged 44 and 40, along with their 19-year-old son, were detained by immigration officers as they were trying to catch a flight to London.
Police said all three members of the family arrived at the airport around 8:15pm in an attempt to board an outbound flight. Immigration officers questioned the validity of their passports during inspection and the three suspects were placed under arrest.
Cops ended up searching their hotel room in Larnaca where the family had left their real passports behind, described as genuine Iranian documents. Police did not name the issuing country of the second set of passports which they believe to be fake, while it was later discovered that they had entered the country illegally.
The three suspects were placed in custody while police are investigating possible immigration offences as well as document forgery allegations.
