Fear and uncertainty have gripped the residents of Santorini after a series of earthquakes rocked the island, prompting local authorities to close schools on Monday as a precautionary measure. The decision also affects nearby islands, including Amorgos, Paros, Antiparos, and Naxos, as experts continue to monitor seismic activity in the region.

The tremors, which began over the weekend, have left residents on edge, with many choosing to sleep outside in their cars or in designated safe areas rather than risk being indoors during potential aftershocks. Others gathered near the island’s hospital, where a Special Disaster Response Unit (EMAK) has been stationed for emergency interventions.

Over 200 tremors have been recorded in the past 48 hours, with the strongest reaching a magnitude of 4.5.

The anxiety among residents was further heightened on Sunday night when long lines formed at travel agencies, as many attempted to leave the island. The rush to book flights and ferry tickets caused ticket prices to soar, with last-minute seats on the Santorini-Athens route reaching €200.

Authorities are urging residents to remain cautious, advising them to avoid large gatherings inside buildings, stay away from abandoned structures, and steer clear of coastal areas in case of strong aftershocks. Officials have also designated emergency gathering points across the island in case an organized evacuation becomes necessary.

Experts from Greece’s Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (OASP) have stated that the seismic activity is linked to underwater faults rather than volcanic activity. However, given the island’s history and location in the Greek Volcanic Arc, vigilance remains high. Over 200 tremors have been recorded in the past 48 hours, with the strongest reaching a magnitude of 4.5.

In addition to school closures, authorities have canceled all scheduled events in indoor venues until further notice. Residents are being advised to secure loose objects, remain alert, and follow official updates as the situation develops.

While experts continue to assess the risk, the psychological toll on Santorini’s population is evident. With memories of past seismic events still fresh, the island’s residents are bracing for what comes next, hoping for stability but prepared for the worst.
