Flu A hits hard across Cyprus as winter viruses circulate

RSV and adenovirus add to seasonal surge, experts urge vaccination and caution for children and seniors.

Flu A is running high across Cyprus this winter, with other viruses such as RSV and adenovirus also circulating, health experts say.

Dr. Maria Koliou, a pediatric infectious disease specialist and associate professor at the University of Cyprus Medical School, told KYPE that the flu remains in “full seasonal swing” at major hospitals, including Nicosia’s Makarios Hospital, where cases show no sign of slowing.

“This year’s wave is particularly intense and, unfortunately, has already led to fatalities, mainly among older adults,” Dr. Koliou said. RSV, once primarily a childhood illness, is now also affecting adults over 65, especially those with chronic lung conditions.

Health authorities emphasize vaccination as the first and best line of defense, especially for high-risk groups such as people over 60, those with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, and children aged six months to five years.

“Flu isn’t just a cold,” Dr. Koliou warned. “Complications can be severe, including necrotizing encephalitis, myocarditis, and myositis. That’s why vaccination and preventive measures are so important.”

She urged the public to practice simple protective steps: avoid close contact with sick individuals, ventilate indoor spaces, and keep children home until fever and major symptoms subside.

For RSV, infants remain the most vulnerable. New monoclonal antibody treatments, administered during the RSV season from October to March, appear to be protecting many babies from severe illness. Adults at risk, particularly seniors with lung disease, are also encouraged to seek RSV vaccination.

While cases continue to circulate, Dr. Koliou stressed that the situation is “under control,” thanks to vaccines and preventive measures.
