Health authorities have confirmed seven deaths linked to laboratory-confirmed influenza since the start of the current flu season, with all fatalities involving elderly patients, most of whom had underlying health conditions. The deaths were recorded among patients hospitalized within the national surveillance network between December and mid-January.

Hospitalizations due to influenza have risen notably, placing increased strain on healthcare facilities. In total, 98 patients required inpatient care, the majority of whom, 85 cases, were treated in public hospitals, while 13 were admitted to private clinics. Of these cases, 39 were confirmed through molecular (PCR) testing, with the remaining 59 identified using rapid antigen tests.

In response to growing pressure on hospitals and limited bed availability, the Ministry of Health convened an emergency coordination meeting involving all relevant stakeholders. The discussion centered on managing patient flow and improving cooperation between public and private healthcare providers to better address the surge in seasonal respiratory infections. Representatives from public hospital services, health insurance authorities, and private hospitals participated.

Health officials emphasized that the healthcare system remains adequately prepared, noting that preventive planning has been in place, with vaccination serving as the cornerstone of protection against severe illness.

At the same time, authorities renewed their call for public vigilance, particularly among vulnerable populations. Citizens are urged to follow basic protective measures, including maintaining good hand hygiene, wearing masks in enclosed or crowded spaces, ensuring proper ventilation indoors, and avoiding close contact with individuals showing respiratory symptoms.

Additional precautions include regular disinfection of frequently touched surfaces and the use of face masks when visiting hospitals or long-term care facilities. Individuals experiencing flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, breathing difficulties, nasal congestion, or sore throat are advised to self-isolate, use a mask around others, undergo diagnostic testing, and promptly consult their personal physician for evaluation and possible antiviral treatment.

Health officials stress that seasonal flu vaccination, especially for high-risk groups, remains the most effective defense against serious complications.
