Foot-and-mouth disease confirmed in Larnaca farm, authorities take swift action

Livestock cull and movement restrictions in place, but no risk to humans.

Authorities have confirmed a case of foot-and-mouth disease at a cattle farm in Livadia, Larnaca, prompting immediate containment measures.

The veterinary services said the affected farmer has been informed, and all personnel involved are following a strict management plan. That plan includes the culling of the infected animals to prevent the virus from spreading.

Officials have also closed the area around the farm within a three-kilometer radius, enforcing a ban on the movement of livestock and livestock products unless cleared by Veterinary Services. A coordination meeting is currently underway to oversee the response.

Despite the swift action, veterinary services emphasized that there is no risk to human health. The disease affects animals only, and consuming meat or dairy products from unaffected areas remains safe.

The authorities urge farmers and livestock handlers in the area to comply with the restrictions and report any unusual symptoms in their animals immediately.

This case is a reminder of the strict measures in place to protect Cyprus’s livestock industry and prevent the spread of contagious diseases.
