Giorgio Armani, the Italian designer who redefined global fashion with his sleek tailoring and timeless elegance, has died at 91.
Armani turned power suits into symbols of confidence in the 1980s, dressed Hollywood royalty from Julia Roberts to Russell Crowe, and built a fashion empire spanning clothing, fragrances, hotels and sport. His company now generates more than £2 billion a year.
“He made history and will be remembered forever,” Donatella Versace said in tribute. Italy’s prime minister called him “an icon of the best of Italy.”
Even into his 90s, Armani remained hands-on, presenting new collections and championing changes in the industry, including banning dangerously thin models. His legacy, elegance, simplicity and confidence, will continue shaping fashion for generations.
