Interest has soared for the medical school of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), which has now officially opened its Cyprus branch in Nicosia. According to Education Minister Dr. Athena Michaelides, over 300 students have already applied for just 60 available places.

The announcement came after the Council of Ministers approved the university’s registration in the Cyprus Register of Universities, marking the formal completion of procedures that allow foreign universities to operate in the country.

“This is the happy conclusion of a process that began with the regulation of the legislation,” Michaelidou said. “The Kapodistrian University of Athens is the first to establish a branch in Cyprus.”

The new branch will be based in Nicosia, with Larnaca also being considered for future expansion. Some of the facilities have already been approved for use and granted by the Archdiocese and the Nicosia Municipality in the city center.

Courses will be offered at the undergraduate level, in both Greek and foreign languages, as part of Cyprus’s wider push to internationalize higher education. Classes are expected to begin by the end of October, with tuition details to be announced by the university itself.
