Justice Minister renounces lifetime pension in rare move

Costas Fytiris gives up ministerial benefits, saying public service must be about responsibility, not rewards.

Cyprus’ Justice and Public Order Minister Costas Fytiris is walking away from a benefit many politicians quietly keep: a lifetime ministerial pension.

In a written statement released Tuesday, Fytiris announced that he has officially and permanently renounced both the lifelong pension tied to his ministerial post and the lump sum that comes with it. The declaration has already been submitted to the Ministry of Finance and Parliament.

Put simply, he says he doesn’t want any perks just because he is a minister.

“My decision is based on institutional responsibility and moral consistency,” Fytiris said, stressing that he is giving up all privileges linked to his ministerial role. The only benefits he will keep are those earned through his 40 years of service in the National Guard.

The minister made the announcement publicly to shut down what he called inaccurate commentary around the issue. He also underlined that this is not a symbolic gesture. According to Fytiris, the money he is giving up is roughly five times more than what the state would save by temporarily suspending his pension for just two years.

In other words, he says this is about substance, not optics.

Fytiris also pointed out that entering politics came at a personal financial cost. He said he left a well-paid private sector career to take on what he described as a demanding and difficult portfolio, with a focus on strengthening security across Cyprus.

“I left the private sector, where my earnings were much higher, to serve the country,” he said. “With full dedication and determination, I will do everything needed to meet society’s demands for a safe environment throughout Cyprus.”

At a time when public trust in politics is often fragile, the move sends a clear message: at least one minister is choosing principle over privilege and putting it in writing.
