Police reject claims of anti-Hebrew hate crime in Limassol

Authorities say hotel incident involved a dispute among Israeli nationals, not an culturally-motivated assault.

Police have dismissed claims circulating in Israeli media that an Israeli citizen was attacked in Limassol for speaking Hebrew, saying the accounts do not reflect what actually happened.

According to police sources, the incident in question took place at a hotel in Limassol and involved a confrontation among Israeli nationals themselves. Authorities stressed that there is no evidence the altercation was motivated by language or identity.

The reports, which began spreading online on Monday, were based largely on social media posts by the injured man’s father. These posts alleged that his son was violently assaulted after being overheard speaking Hebrew at the hotel entrance and later returned to Israel for eye surgery.

However, police said that the injured individual was involved in a dispute with fellow Israelis during an event at the hotel. They added that the man has submitted a written statement indicating he does not wish to pursue a complaint.

The matter is currently being handled by the Episkopi Police Station, which continues to review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
