Limassol hotel shooting sets off murder hunt across the divide

Police say suspects may have fled to the occupied north after money dispute turned violent.

A late-night shooting outside a luxury hotel in Limassol has left a 42-year-old Ukrainian man seriously injured, in what police believe was a violent fallout over money.

The victim, a permanent resident of Cyprus, was shot at close range in the abdomen while standing in the hotel’s parking lot. He underwent emergency surgery at Limassol General Hospital and remains in serious but stable condition.

Police rushed to the scene after hospital staff reported the incident. Investigators recovered a shell casing and other evidence from the parking lot. Security cameras also recorded the movements of the attackers, who fled on foot before escaping in a car later found abandoned along the Zygi coastal road.

According to investigators, the shooting followed a heated argument involving around ten people. Witnesses named the suspected shooters, though they did not provide details about what triggered the fight. Police suspect the clash was linked to financial differences.

Authorities have already released photos of the alleged gunmen, who are permanent residents of Cyprus. However, officers fear the men may have slipped across the Green Line into the island’s occupied north to avoid arrest.

It would not be the first time suspects in serious crimes have crossed to the north, where Cypriot police have no authority and cooperation is limited, making extradition difficult.

Meanwhile, the Limassol District Court has rejected a police request for a search warrant at the main suspect’s home, ruling there was not enough evidence to allow the move.

Police say the men were not hotel guests but had come to the property for a meeting that spiraled into violence. Investigators are still piecing together the full story and are waiting to hear from the victim once his condition improves.
