Limassol’s new local authority hailed as early success of government reform

Interior Minister says the unified public service model is already improving life for residents.

Fifteen months after Cyprus rolled out its sweeping local government reform, Limassol’s new district authority is being held up as one of the early success stories.

During the inauguration of a new Public Service Center for water and sewage issues, located in the old SALA building, Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou praised the Limassol District Organization (EOA) for showing real progress in its first year of operation.

“In its 15 months of operation, the Limassol Organization has made progress in all areas of its responsibility,” Ioannou said. “The benefits of this reform are already visible in citizens’ daily lives.”

The new service center is part of the broader effort to streamline local administration, cut red tape, and make it easier for residents to handle essential services under one roof, from water connections to sewage payments.

Ioannou said he’s confident that as the system matures, its efficiency and responsiveness will continue to improve, noting that “reform takes time, but we are already seeing tangible results.”

The Limassol EOA was established in mid-2024 as part of Cyprus’s largest local government overhaul in decades, which merged various municipal departments into a unified structure at the district level. The reform aims to end duplication of services and deliver faster, more transparent governance.

For Limassol residents, that means fewer queues, fewer offices to visit, and a single point of contact for day-to-day municipal matters, a practical change that’s already earning positive feedback from locals.

“It’s a real step forward,” said Ioannou, who described the reform as “a living system that will only get stronger over time.”

The minister added that Limassol’s experience could serve as a model for other districts, as similar centers are expected to open across Cyprus in the coming months.
