French President Emmanuel Macron arrived at the Presidential Palace on Thursday, marking a historic moment for Cyprus: the first official bilateral visit by a French head of state since the Republic was founded in 1960.

Macron was welcomed by President Nikos Christodoulides in a formal ceremony, with a military guard of honor and the national anthems of both countries setting the tone.

In a symbolic move, the French leader laid a wreath at the statue of Archbishop Makarios III, the island’s first president and a key figure in its independence. The gesture is widely seen as a sign of respect for Cyprus’ history and sovereignty, something that carries particular weight for a country still shaped by division and ongoing efforts toward reunification.

Beyond the ceremony, the visit is expected to carry real political substance.

The two presidents held a private meeting inside the Presidential Palace, followed by expanded talks between their delegations. Discussions are expected to focus on issues that matter directly to Cypriots, including regional security, energy cooperation and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.

For Cyprus, France has increasingly emerged as a key ally in recent years, particularly in defense and energy, areas that have taken on added importance given tensions in the region.

The visit is also seen as a sign of growing alignment between the two countries, with Nicosia looking to strengthen its role within the European Union and deepen ties with influential partners like Paris.

The two leaders are expected to make statements to the media following their talks, outlining what comes next in what both sides describe as an increasingly strategic relationship.
