Suspended Paphos mayor Phedonas Phedonos is pushing back against allegations that have shaken the local political scene, claiming he is the target of a “coordinated and relentless attack” aimed at destroying him politically and personally.

In a written statement released as the case moves forward, Phedonos said the campaign against him began on January 21, 2026, describing it as an effort at his “political and moral elimination.”

“Certain individuals found fertile ground in a weakened state and took advantage of the opportunity, while others with dirty hands targeted me with slander,” he said.

The mayor, who has been suspended from his duties pending trial, is facing serious charges related to the alleged rape of a woman years ago, allegations he strongly denies.

He argued that people he had previously exposed through his political work, particularly in cases involving corruption, money laundering and mismanagement, are now attempting to discredit him.

“They believe now is the time to throw mud and see what sticks,” he said.

Phedonos said he intends to respond to every claim and report in detail but will first focus on the criminal case itself. He also noted that he learned key developments about the case through the media, including when it was first filed at the Limassol District Court on April 2, before later being withdrawn and refiled at the Paphos District Court for April 21, where he appeared in person.

The case has drawn intense public attention, not only because of the nature of the allegations but also due to Phedonos’ high-profile role and his outspoken stance on corruption over the years.

In his statement, he thanked his family for what he described as the “disproportionate burden” they are carrying, as well as supporters who have stood by him.

“The time will come when everything will be said as it should be,” he added, calling for patience and insisting that “entanglement and corruption are not unbeatable.”

He also urged the public to follow the court proceedings closely, expressing hope that all details of the trial will be made public.

The case remains ongoing, with the court expected to examine the allegations in the coming months.
