Plans to use Makarios Stadium as a new Park & Ride site hit a roadblock after the Cyprus Sports Organization (CSO) rejected the proposal. The Ministry of Transport is now scouting alternative locations across Nicosia and Limassol to ease city traffic.
CSO stands firm
The CSO said the Park & Ride plan conflicts with its long-term vision for Makarios Stadium. According to CSO President Yiannis Ioannou, the area is earmarked for a modern sports city, including a new stadium with 4,000–5,000 spectator capacity, as part of a broader upgrade of Cyprus’ sports infrastructure.
New sites under consideration
Following the rejection, the Ministry of Transport is exploring several options:
In Nicosia: potential sites near the General Hospital, expansions at Alambra, and searches in Tamassos, Kokkinotrimithia, and Archangelos.
In Limassol: existing Park & Ride spaces at Alphamega and Tsireio stadiums, a soon-to-open site at Spyros Kyprianou, and a new facility near Nikou Pattihi expected to finish in 14 months. The ministry is also considering a location along the city’s coastal road.
With Makarios Stadium off the table, the ministry faces the challenge of quickly identifying suitable alternatives to support public transport and reduce congestion. Officials say new Park & Ride locations are expected to roll out in stages over the next year.
