Man arrested in Cyprus after Europol child pornography tip

Police say the case points to growing efforts to crack down on online child abuse.

Cyprus Police say they are stepping up their fight against online child abuse after arresting a 30-year-old man in a case that began with a Europol tip.

According to the Cybercrime Prosecution Branch, the case dates back to May, when Europol flagged an account that had uploaded 140 images and videos of child sexual abuse. Investigators traced the account to the suspect, who was arrested Monday under a court warrant.

During the arrest, officers seized the man’s mobile phone, which already showed two such files in a preliminary check. A search of his home led to the confiscation of two laptops and a USB stick for forensic analysis.

Police also discovered narcotics at the scene, leading to a separate arrest for drug possession.

Authorities say the operation underscores how cooperation between Cyprus Police and Europol is being used to track down online offenders and protect children from abuse.

The Cybercrime Prosecution Branch is continuing its investigation.
