Shoppers in Cyprus saw noticeable price increases on everyday supermarket items in the second half of May, with sauces, eggs, dairy products, and personal hygiene goods among the most affected categories.
One of the sharpest rises was recorded in mayonnaise, where the price of a standard pack jumped by 34 cents overnight, a 9.8% increase, according to data from the Cyprus Consumers Association.
Eggs also became more expensive, with a 12-pack rising by 29 cents, while cheese, yogurt, soaps, tissues, and other household essentials also saw upward price movement across multiple brands and categories.
In total, the association recorded 165 price increases across 34 different product categories during the period, highlighting how frequently prices are shifting in the local market.
Not all changes were upward. The same period also saw 133 price reductions, with an average drop of 9.4%, suggesting a mixed and often unpredictable pattern of price movement across supermarkets.
In some cases, products even appeared to go up in price and then come back down again within a short time, something the association says deserves closer scrutiny.
The data is based on price tracking from the government’s e-Kalathi platform and a private comparison app, Smart Kalathi, which monitor daily changes in supermarket pricing.
The Consumers Association said it will continue to monitor developments closely, noting that the key question remains why similar market conditions are producing both increases and decreases across different products at the same time.
For many households, however, the takeaway is more immediate: the weekly shop continues to shift, and even small changes, like a few extra cents on mayonnaise or eggs, can quietly add up over time.
