In response to a series of complaints about harassment and assaults against women along the Amathus seafront, police have begun regular patrols of the area, local officials confirmed on Wednesday.
Speaking on the radio program “Diaspora Eidiseon,” Amathus Mayor Kyriakos Xydias described the state of neglect that has made parts of the coastal zone unsafe. “They’ve taken the wires, the iron beams beneath the bridge. There’s simply no infrastructure for lighting,” he said, adding that he has urged police to increase their presence in the area.
Asked whether upgrading infrastructure alone could resolve the issue, Xydias was blunt: “No. What we’re dealing with is a serious shortage of policing.”
The mayor said that letters and complaints arrive daily at the municipal offices describing vandalism, antisocial behavior, and safety concerns in public spaces and parks. He stressed that stronger law enforcement and surveillance systems are needed to restore a sense of security for residents and visitors alike.
