Police are stepping up their presence inside the walled city of Nicosia, aiming to boost safety and public confidence with more visible patrols and on-the-spot checks.
In a coordinated operation on Thursday, officers arrested a 43-year-old man after finding a knuckle duster and a device used to release harmful gas in his possession. Both items were confiscated. The man was charged and released pending a court date.
Two more people were also taken into custody during the sweep for illegally staying in Cyprus.
Police say the operation is part of a wider effort to tighten security in key areas, launched by Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis and Deputy Minister for Migration Nikolas Ioannidis. Officers from the Crime Prevention Unit (OPE) and the Mobile Immediate Action Unit (YAM) carried out the checks.
Authorities inspected several premises and checked the IDs of 109 people, both Cypriots and foreign nationals.
Officials say more operations of this kind are expected in the coming weeks as part of a broader push to restore a stronger sense of safety in Nicosia’s historic center.
