During the recent Economist conference in Nicosia, former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed the ongoing Cyprus dispute. While acknowledging that he is not a specialist on the issue, Pompeo suggested that Turkish Cypriots are generally open to finding a resolution, but he questioned whether Turkey’s leadership shares the same commitment.

Pompeo expressed conditional support for a federal solution, emphasizing that any agreement should reflect the genuine will of both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.

He also touched on broader tensions in U.S.-Turkey relations, citing concerns such as Turkey’s acquisition of Russian weapons and its military interventions abroad. Despite these challenges, Pompeo expressed optimism that Turkey might eventually pursue closer alignment with European norms and standards.
