Cyprus is bracing for a period of severe weather as a barometric low system, named ADEL, moves across the region, bringing heavy thunderstorms, strong winds, and the possibility of hail from Saturday night through Sunday.
The Cyprus Meteorology Department has issued a yellow weather warning, noting that the most intense conditions are expected from 23:00 on Saturday until 17:00 on Sunday. Initially affecting the west and north, the storms will gradually extend across the entire island.
According to the official weather bulletin, cloud cover will increase throughout Saturday, leading to isolated showers in the afternoon. Winds will range from southeast to southwest at 3–4 Beaufort, and the sea will be slightly rough.
Overnight, the impact of the ADEL low-pressure system will intensify. Local showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected across Cyprus, again beginning in the west and north. Hail is possible, and on the highest peaks of Troodos, even sleet cannot be ruled out. Winds will shift to southwest–northwest, strengthening at times to 4–5 Beaufort, while the sea will become rougher, especially in western and northern coastal areas. Nighttime temperatures will drop to 12°C inland, 14–15°C along the coasts, and 7°C in the mountains.
On Sunday, conditions remain unstable with partly to mostly cloudy skies, local showers, and isolated thunderstorms likely throughout the day. Hail may again accompany storms, and winds will strengthen further, reaching 5 Beaufort at times. The sea will be slightly rough to rough, particularly in the west and north. Temperatures will rise slightly, reaching around 20°C inland, 21°C on the coasts, and 10°C in mountainous regions.
Rainfall during the most intense thunderstorms may reach 35–55 mm per hour, significantly increasing the risk of hazardous conditions.
Looking ahead, the unsettled weather is expected to persist into Monday and Tuesday, with periods of increased cloud cover and isolated showers, mainly over the mountains and northern areas. By Wednesday, only high cloud is forecast. Temperatures through Tuesday will remain close to seasonal averages without major fluctuations.
Residents are advised to remain cautious, especially during periods of heavy rainfall and strong winds, and to stay updated with official weather announcements.
