A weak low-pressure system continues to drift lazily around the region, while ADEL, the barometric low who has yet to commit to any strong opinions, is expected to approach the island on Saturday afternoon, still in her characteristically half-strength, half-interest mode.
Today, the weather will be mostly clear, which is perfect for all the Thanksgiving traditions that are not happening around you. There’s no day off, no Macy’s Parade, no American football game, and no stove-top stuffing unless you smuggled a box in your suitcase like the true hero you are. At best you might see one inflatable Santa at Jumbo. And if you mention cranberry sauce at work, prepare for polite confusion.
Clouds will increase in the afternoon and may deliver isolated showers in the mountains, where the weather likes to be melodramatic. Winds will blow from the northeast to southeast at 3 to 4 Beaufort, the sea will be slightly rough, and temperatures will climb to around 24°C inland and on the coasts, with a cooler 15°C at higher elevations.
Tonight, the sky clears again, winds shift northwest to northeast with occasional moderate gusts, and the sea remains slightly rough. A quiet, ordinary Cypriot night, completely unaware that Americans somewhere are slipping into food comas.
Friday will be mostly clear as well. Saturday brings more cloud cover in places, and from Saturday afternoon into Sunday, intermittent showers and isolated thunderstorms will appear, finally giving you a bit of atmospheric drama to match the holiday you’re missing.
Temperatures will stay above average until Saturday and then drop noticeably on Sunday, as if trying to remember that late November is supposed to feel like something.
And now, the great mystery of Cyprus: no Thanksgiving, no day off, no turkey (let’s not say Turkey too loudly), no stuffing, and yet somehow—Black Friday is a national sport. Stores will open early, crowds will line up, discounts will appear like migrating birds, and suddenly everyone acts like they’ve been culturally preparing for this moment their entire lives. It’s as if the island collectively decided, “Look, we’re not doing the whole American holiday thing… but cheap TVs? Absolutely.”
One final reminder, just to keep international relations smooth: today is Thanksgiving, but here it is definitely not “Turkey Day.” Here in Cyprus, that phrase hits… differently. We’re celebrating gratitude, not international incidents.
